Reading in Orillia

I recently had the pleasure of attending a reading by science fiction author Julie Czerneda at the Leacock museum in Orillia Ontario, Julie’s current hometown. This is actually the second reading she’s done here, the first being last August when she won two Aurora Awards; one for her novel In the Company of Others, and her short story, Left Foot on a Blind Man.

The day was bright and sunny, a great day for a drive north. My wife, Liz, and I arrived early and had plenty of time to walk around the grounds, on the shore of Lake Couchaching.

Robert J. Sawyer, another award-winning Canadian science fiction author, was on hand to introduce her. Julie read from her new novel, Hidden in Sight, the third in the Web Shifters line of books, and my favourite of hers. Julie gives great readings, always enthusiastic and interesting, and this was no different. Thirty or so were in the audience to hear her.

After the reading, the museum presented Julie with flowers, and she was interviewed for a local radio station. I was able to get several books signed by both Julie and Rob, and bought some for friends.
